Ideal Events were approached by the festival management team and invited to submit a proposal for the design and build of the lighting rig for the official on-site after parties at the Sundown Festival, held at Norfolk Showground.
Having already secured the contract to build the stage structure itself, we accepted the invitation and tasked our technical lighting team to produce a number of initial concepts.
Although Sundown Festival had grown in popularity extremely quickly since its first event in 2012, the production budget for the after party, was by no means extravagant, and our design team faced the challenge of delivery the WOW factor, within a tight budget, and to a festival management team who were well educated in the lighting industry, and subsequently expected to see their budget used efficiently and effectively.
At a subsequent planning meeting, two of Ideal Events’ concepts were presented, and following a discussion between Ideal Events and the festival management team, we were awarded the contract.
Having been successful in the acquisition of the contract, Ideal Events initiated the technical design process, taking the initial concept into a full 3D CAD model, using a variety of CAD design and lighting visualisation software programs.
An array of lighting fixtures were used, to compliment the variety and tempo of the various music styles which the stage would host during the festival.
Our lighting team worked alongside our structural designers, technical staff and the venue management to ensure the rigging tolerances and power requirements were adhered to.
The build commenced five days prior to the festival opening and was site managed by Simon Duvall, Ideal Events Technical Manager.
A three man crew were responsible for building the main rig structure and positioning fixtures relevant to the 2D and 3D CAD plans.
On completion of the build, the rig was inspected and tested for structural and electrical safety, all data communications were confirmed as active and the rig was raised via electrical hoists, in preparation for the supporting legs to be installed.
The rig had been designed for control via an Avolites Pearl Expert desk, which was located in a F.O.H position on a raised control platform.
Simon Duvall was responsible for overseeing the programming of the desk, ensuring the shows modelled on the 3D visualiser, were perfectly reproduced.
Once the programming had been completed, the entire show was rehearsed overnight, in order to match the ambient lighting levels that would be present during the live performance.
The Sundown Festival after party shows went live at 11pm, with a run time of three hours. Simon Duvall assumed the role of Lighting director with the assistance of a second crew member, responsible for back of house support.
The shows were operated without experiencing any technical issues and received compliments from both stage management and artists alike.
Ideal Events were tasked with creating a stunning lighting show, capable of meeting the
demands of different genres of music, with a relatively constrained budget.
From initial concept to site de-rig, this task met all and indeed exceeded many of its’
requirements, with an accident free site, compliments from the festival Health & Safety
Executive and numerous positive comments from stage management and performing
artists alike, Ideal Events concluded a successful outcome and have since enjoyed a
continued working relationship with the festival.
